Carolina Native Production Manager and Assistant Shrub Grower
Primary Position:
Carolina Native’s Nursery Production Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing the entire process of plant production. Their primary responsibilities revolve around ensuring the efficient production and quality of plants while managing resources effectively and efficiently. They combine managerial skills with technical skills of running a successful potting season to achieve a high quality and efficient plant production. The team at Carolina Native will provide all necessary training on all the Javo potting equipment including manuals (both Javo and staff produced), hands on training prior to and during production, and continued support. Our potting team is very experienced.
This part of the position usually takes place from early February through June.
- Manage all aspects of overseeing the potting, fertilizing, and general initial condition of plants.
- Coordinate with nursery manager and growers ensuring the plants are placed in the growing areas effectively for future plant growth based on species while also maximizing available space.
- Supervise a team of nursery staff, ensuring they are properly trained on the Javo Potting Machine while also providing safety tools and standards. Motivate the team to maintain high productivity and efficiency throughout all stages of plant production.
- Implement and enforce quality control measures to ensure all plants meet company standards and customer expectations, such as depth of plant in soil, correct fertilization amounts, and proper safety measures around potting machines and nursery.
- Monitor inventory levels of fertilizer, physical pots, soil and rice hulls. Maintain records related to plant production, inventory, and materials on Google Documents as well as physical hardcopies for production days.Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks to meet production goals. Handling a few tasks simultaneously during a potting run is crucial to keeping the staff on track and running efficiently.
- Having knowledge of driving tractors and loading and unloading of pallets with a skid steer as well as operating a bucket for soil dumps into the machine are also helpful skills.
- Oversee maintenance of all potting equipment and facility
Secondary responsibilities: Shrub Grower assisting the nursery manager. Working in the native shrub growing facility which includes the following responsibilities. It is the summer months that this job really comes into a critical time.
Assist in Management of shrub farm and shrub inventory
- Follow all of our established standard operating procedures (SOPS)
- Maintenance of all existing shrubs on the property
- Learn how we: monitor moisture and run irrigation, manage pests and diseases, fertilize, prune, and weed
- Complete and update the daily schedules for shrub care
- Continue to develop SOPs to insure top quality plants
- Advise sales staff of product quality and availability
- Help to develop shrub projections and purchase schedules
Qualifications:
- Nursery experience will be favored
- Skill and experience in data entry/record keeping
- Microsoft Word and Excel
- Hardworking and engaged team member
- Pesticide applicator’s license is a plus
- Operating skid steers and tractors is a plus
- Able to work in outdoor conditions
This is a salaried, full time position with benefits including health Insurance and paid time off. Salary depends on experience. We are open Monday-Friday.
Requirements: Associates or bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related nursery production experience.
